ANALYSIS "THE RETREAT" BY USING HISTORICAL CRITICISM

1.     The writer took the historical event from the civil war in 1642-1651. In poetry there must be verses that contain fiction, for example there is a figure of speech that uses the word connotation. For example, the sentence “Is drunk, and staggers in the way.”
2.     “The Retreat” was published in 1650 or written in the latter half of the 17th century. At the time his works were published many people thought that henry Vaughan plagiarism  the poems of his twin Herbert.
3.     Social attitudes related to the action in the work is his opens medical practices after the war until the end of his life.
4.     The other of historical documents that might be analyzed in conjunction are Poems with the Tenth Satire of Juvenal Englished (1646), Olor Iscanus (1647), Silex Scintillans (1650 and 1655).
5.     In my opinion, from the past we can learn many things, such as when our bad past is made a lesson and if our good past is made as a motivation in our lives now and in the future. As reflected in the poem "The Retreat" do not go too far in the past even though it is beautiful, because we live to move forward not to go back because it is not possible.
